I heart the animation and storytelling in this video from Melpo Mene, called I Adore You. You might recognize it from the Volvo commercial.

I’m stoked for the animation and storyboarding classes in the summer.

Van Gogh’s Starry Night

April 3rd, 2008

One of the most popular and well known paintings in the world; Van Gogh’s Starry Night.

While most interpret this painting as an ethereal piece of spirituality, hope and light, my friend Bobby Choy has a different take…

“misinterpretation”

oil on canvas, 1999/2001

What you see here is a portrait painting I made my Junior year in college, which I later enhanced with other images seen in three blocks left of the figure in the Spring of 2001. This piece started out just as a portrait of a Bible/photography professor at Gordon College (who is well known for interpreting parts of the Bible). When I added the three blocks it took a deeper turn into meaning something more. My favorite painting since high school has been Vincent Van Goh’s “Starry Night”. I had heard how he painted it during a time he had lost his faith in God, and that that is why all the town buildings are painted with lights turned on while the church remained unlit. Most people don’t know this of the piece and of Van Goh, therefore they may misinterpret it as being a painting of hope found, when it could be as well the opposite. In “Misinterpretation” I try to highlight the church by darkening and zooming in on it.
